The site of the annual state fair, which attracts close to a half million people each year, the Timonium Fairgrounds stretch 100 acres. The grounds also entertains other events such as motorcycle races, craft festivals, 4-H fairs and gem and jewelry, toys, reptiles, cats, livestock and computer shows. Basically, the fairgrounds host anything and everything. Since June of 1879, Timonium has showcased the Maryland State Fair, which now occurs at the end of August. The activities of the early years included home arts, farm produce and garden goodies, as well as plowing competitions and horse races. The first airmail delivery made in the United States happened in 1918 at the fair. During World War II, the army used the lot as a storage depot and repair center. Modern day state fair events are livestock and horse shows, rides, wildlife and other educational exhibits, local bands, contests and thoroughbred racing. --Karen Keys
