Founded in 1696, St. John's College offers an integrated arts and sciences
program based on a chronological study of seminal works of Western
civilization. The curriculum consists of courses in mathematics,
languages, science, music, a combination of philosophy, theology, history
and other liberal arts disciplines. St. John's has a population of approximately 450
students (75% of whom live in on campus housing, including a new dormitory completed in 2004) who contribute to the cultural and social life that makes up Annapolis. St. John's features numerous musical concerts, occasional plays, exhibitions and readings.
St. John's College operates under the principle that the best approach to a liberal arts education lies in examining a list of works known as The Great Books. The Great Books include the Bible, Paradise Lost, the Iliad and other classics of Western thought. While in theory this seems like a good idea, in practice, this style of learning completely ignores the advent of feminism, the civil rights movement and cultures beyond the West.
