Founded in 1876 and named for its benefactor merchant Johns Hopkins, Johns Hopkins University is a national leader in research and teaching, holding a ranking of 15 among national universities.

Divided into eight academic divisions -- the Zanvgl School of Arts and Sciences, the G.W.C Whiting School of Engineering, the School of Continuing Studies, the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, Peabody Institute, the Schools of Medicine, Hygiene and Public Health, and Nursing -- Hopkins has won more federal research and development funding than any other university in recent years.

The 140-acre Homewood campus in northern Baltimore is considered JHU's headquarters campus, though its academic facilites extend as far as China and Italy. More than 16,000 students make up the Hopkins student population, 8,388 of which are full-time undergraduates. Approximately 3,600 undergraduates live on the Homewood campus.

Currently under construction is a new Student Arts Center, which will house a film studio, rehearsal space, and a theater for events open to the public. In the past, the University has brought such speakers as former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres and journalist Ben Bradlee to its Shriver Hall. The locally-renowned Shriver Hall Concert Series has featured the likes of Ivan Drachman and award-winning jazz legend Maynard Ferguson.

JHU offers students a choice of more than 200 clubs and organizations on campus. The men's and women's lacrosse teams top the school's athletics as NCAA Divison I programs. The 22 other varsity sports teams belong to NCAA Division III.

Student hangouts include the nearby Charles Village coffee shops and bars, such as Xando and the Charles Village Pub. The Baltimore Museum of Art marks the south border of the Homewood campus, and offers a discount to Hopkins students. University shuttle buses and public transportation take students almost anywhere they want to go in the city and surrounding areas. -- Ashley King
