It's small. It's dark. It's dingy. To sum it up, The Brass Monkey is basically a little hole in the wall dive and certainly not somewhere you'd ever want to go for cocktails or dancing. If atmosphere is all you really care about, then you might feel right at home here. And if the cramped interior gets too much for you, then you can always step outside and count how many rats you see skulking in the shadows to amuse yourself.

All that aside, The Brass Monkey is one of the best places to catch smaller local bands playing regularly. It certainly doesn't guarantee quality music and performance, but then neither does "success." And sometimes you'll luck out and find a real gem of a band billed along with the acts destined to go nowhere. That and the inexpensive drinks are enough to ensure a return trip.

Despite my preference for a good dance floor and a little more cleanliness, I do find myself returning every so often. Called by a band I've heard good things about or just wanting to hear how good or awful some of the ones I've heard nothing about are. And while I do find myself covering my ears and fleeing outside to escape a musical train-wreck occasionally, more often I end up enjoying the diverse styles and sounds even if the performance is mediocre. --Devlyn Fennell
