Shiplap House, named for its siding normally found on ships, is one of the oldest houses in Annapolis and is rich in local history. Built in 1715, it was inhabited by an inn keeper named Edward Smith until his death in 1723. Taverns like Shiplap House were important to 18th-century society, as they were the only place for visitors to eat and sleep. Restoration began in 1957 and was finished in the early 1980s by private owners. The restoration project revealed a great deal about materials and methods used in 18th-century building construction. Today, Shiplap House is the home of the main offices of the Historic Annapolis Foundation. The Foundation has recreated an 18th-century tavern room on the first floor and maritime trades of the time period are also on display.
