Wiliamsburg Christian boys seize control of Metro

JAMES CITY – Deron Powers enjoys having the ball in his hands at the end of games.
The Williamsburg Christian Academy senior thrives on making plays off the dribble and getting the free-throw line Both were evident Tuesday night during the Eagles 51-47 victory over Atlantic Shores in a showdown of Metro Conference front-runners in Williamsburg.
Powers scored a game-high 19 points, including 11 of 15 from the charity stripe, as Williamsburg Christian Academy (15-5 overall, 8-1 conference) took a one-game lead on Atlantic Shores in the race for the conference championship.
Atlantic Shores (12-11, 6-2) took control late by getting points in transition. Bryon Nelson’s blocked shot resulted in a layup by Javon Gibbs. Phil Owens added a short jumper and then set up Ray Shou for a three-point play to give the Seahawks an 11-9 lead after one quarter of play.
Williamsburg Christian answered as Mark Seaman knocked down a pair of open three-pointers to give the Eagles a 16-13 lead with 5:50 left in the half. Atlantic Shores responded as Owens scored six straight points and Kyonze Chavis added a layup in the final minute to stretch the Seahawks lead to 23-20 at halftime.
The Eagles rebounded in the second half, thanks to the play of their guards. Keenan Gasway sparked a 16-6 spurt with back-to-back treys as Williamsburg Christian built a 36-29 advantage with 1:38 left in the quarter. Jake Duncan added a fadeway trey from the right wing and Powers converted a three-point play to lead 42-36 with one quarter to play.
The Seahawks didn’t go away quietly. Daniel Robinson scored 6 of his 10 points in the final quarter and Shou added a trey to trim the lead to 49-47 with 1:25 left in the game.
Powers made the first of two free throws to stretch the lead to 50-47 with 35 seconds left.
Atlantic Shores had two chances to tie the game in the waning seconds, but couldn’t solve Williamsburg Christian’s man-to-man defense. Joe Treacy made a great rebound off a miss with 21.5 seconds left. On the next possession, Powers hauled down another miss with 6.4 seconds and was fouled on the play with 6.4 seconds left. After missing his first shot, Powers calmly sank the second one to preserve the victory.
Duncan tallied 12 points and Gasway and Seaman added six points apiece in the win.
Owens led Atlantic Shores with 13 points Robinson tallied 10 and Chavis added eight in the loss.
