AP exams put teens at head of the class

WILLIAMSBURG — Participation and performance on Advance Placement exams is on the rise throughout the Historic Triangle.
Both WJC and York school divisions scored an increase in the number of students taking the tests, the number of tests taken, and the number of scores of 3 or better, good for college credit.
The College Board reported this week that Virginia ranks third in the nation for achievement on AP tests, behind Maryland and New York. One in four of Virginia’s 2011 graduates received a qualifying score of 3 on at least one AP exam.
32,212 seniors took an AP exam last year, up from 30,780. The number of test takers in WJC in grades 10-12 rose to 850 in 2010-11, up 80 from the prior year. In York, numbers rose from 1,091 to 1,294.
WJC students took 1,466 total tests and scored 3 or better on 886 of them. In 2010 the division reported 776 qualifying scores.
York had 1,401 qualifying scores two years ago and 1,547 last year. More than 2,200 tests were taken.
Minority achievement has also increased.
The Virginia Department of Education reported this week that the number of Hispanics taking AP exams has nearly tripled in the last decade. Hispanic students in WJC took 34 total tests last year.
The number of African American students taking AP exams is also up statewide. In 2011, 4,083 participated.
In 2009, black students in WJC took 70 AP exams. The number dropped to 47 in 2010 and rebounded slightly in 2011 to 53. York’s participation among black students increased in 2011, with 77 students taking 119 exams.
