Phelps wins 2 races at World Cup meet
Michael Phelps, winner of six gold medals in the 2004 Olympics, continued his domination of the FINA World Cup in East Meadow, N.Y. Phelps, from Rodgers Forge, lowered his American record in the 200-meter freestyle to 1 minute, 42.78 seconds, then earned his fourth victory of the meet by holding off Thiego Pereira of Brazil in 1:55.28 in the 200 individual medley. On Friday, Phelps, 20, set the American mark of 4:03.99 in the 400 IM and also won the 100 IM in 53.21 at the 25-meter short course at the Nassau County Aquatic Center. Filippo Mangini of Italy was second to Phelps in the 200 freestyle at 1:42.94, followed by Pereira at 1:55.78. Phelps jumped off to an early lead on Mangini, who overtook him at 25 meters. Phelps won by out-touching Mangini at the finish. Tara Kirk, winner of four straight NCAA titles in the 100 breaststroke while at Stanford, dominated the women's races. She completed a sweep of the three events in her specialty by taking the 50 in 30.58 and the 200 in 2:20.84.

Ravens' R. Lewis says he'll miss minicamps
In his first interview since October, linebacker Ray Lewis said he will miss all of the Ravens' minicamps while recovering from hamstring surgery. Lewis told the NFL Network that he expects an additional three months of rehabilitation, which should allow him to ready for the start of training camp. Lewis missed the last 10 games of the regular season with a torn hamstring and had surgery in December.

Red Sox pushing Angels for trade
The Boston Red Sox made a strong push last week to trade disgruntled slugger Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles Angels, but talks bogged down with the Angels balking at Boston's price, the Los Angeles Times reported. The chances for a deal seem unlikely because the Red Sox wanted the Angels to assume virtually all of the $57 million remaining on Ramirez's contract. Yesterday, the Red Sox and pitcher Josh Beckett settled their arbitration case, agreeing to a one-year contract for $4,325,000.

Hingis falls short in Tokyo final
Second-seeded Elena Dementieva ended Martina Hingis' run with a 6-2, 6-0 victory today in the final of the WTA Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. Hingis, who entered the tournament as a wild card, had defeated top-seeded Maria Sharapova, 6-3, 6-1, yesterday.

Canceled downhill helps Walchhofer
The next-to-last World Cup downhill of the season was canceled because of heavy fog in Chamonix, France, strengthening Austrian Michael Walchhofer's chances of defending his season title. Austrian Fritz Strobl and American Daron Rahlves will have a difficult time catching Walchofer, who leads the downhill standings with 498 points. Strobl has 441 points and Rahlves has 408.

NCAA ends hearing
on OSU allegations
Ohio State likely will wait three to five weeks to find out whether its athletic program will face more sanctions over alleged NCAA violations after the conclusion of the hearing to determine whether self-imposed punishments were adequate. Ohio State banned the men's basketball team from postseason play last year and fired coach Jim O'Brien. on OSU allegations
