Johnson, Liukin off to Games
Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin earned guaranteed spots on the U.S. women's gymnastics team last night in Philadelphia after finishing 1-2 at the Olympic trials - the same places they had at the national championships two weeks ago.
The other four members of the team, which figures to be the gold-medal favorite, will be selected after a camp next month in Houston.
• College World Series // Tommy Mendonca drove in four runs as Fresno State beat North Carolina, 6-1, in Omaha, Neb., to advance to the best-of-three championship series starting today against Georgia. The Tar Heels were denied a third straight finals appearance.
• Basketball // Carmelo Anthony's agent told ESPN.com he has been assured that the Denver Nuggets will not trade the All-Star, despite media reports that said the Detroit Pistons are in talks to acquire him. Citing a Pistons source, the Detroit Free Press reported Saturday that the team was in talks to swap Anthony (Towson Catholic) and Detroit's Chauncey Billups. ... The visiting Detroit Shock beat Atlanta, 97-76, sending the expansion Dream to a WNBA-record-tying 13th straight loss to start the season.
• Soccer // Cesc Fabregas scored the decisive penalty kick in a shootout, sending Spain past Italy, 4-2, after a 0-0 draw in Vienna, Austria, and into the European Championship semifinals against Russia. It was the first win for Spain over Italy in a major competition since the 1920 Olympics. ... The United States beat host Barbados, 1-0, to reach to the regional semifinals of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup. ... Host D.C. United beat the San Jose Earthquakes, 3-1.
• NFL // Suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam Jones said he no longer wants to be called by his nickname "Pacman." ... Tennessee Titans defensive end Jevon Kearse was arrested and charged early with driving under the influence after a traffic stop in Nashville, Tenn.
