Bumps few on Terps' record road
Game-by-game summary of the championship season
Recap: Jason Gardner scored a game-high 23 points, including a four-point play with just over three minutes left that gave the Wildcats the lead for good, as the Terps' season got off to a disappointing start with a loss in the opening round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York. Senior guard Juan Dixon led Maryland with 21 points, five assists and five steals, but played only 25 minutes because of foul trouble.
Record: 0-1
Recap: Showing few ill effects from their loss to Arizona a day earlier, the Terps ended the first half with a 14-2 run and blistered the Owls' trademark matchup zone defense, shooting 59.1 percent from the field and 63.2 percent from three-point range to take the Coaches vs. Cancer consolation game. Temple point guard Lynn Greer scored 27 points and made three consecutive three-point shots to cut the Terps' lead to 78-74 with 13.6 seconds left, but the Owls fell short against a Maryland team that got 25 points from Dixon and 20 from Steve Blake, who was 6-for-7 from the field.
Record: 1-1
Recap: Lonny Baxter scored a game-high 25 points and had nine rebounds and Dixon pitched in with a 22-point performance, as the host Terrapins routed the Eagles. Maryland scored the game's first 10 points, and led by as many as 33 early in the second half.
Record: 2-1
Recap: The Terps had little trouble with the Hornets, coasting to victory at Cole Field House behind Baxter (18 points, 12 rebounds) and Chris Wilcox (16 points, 10 rebounds). Maryland manhandled the Hornets inside, out-rebounding them 31-7 in the second half.
Record: 3-1
Recap: Facing a serious threat to their 79-game winning streak at Cole Field House against nonconference opponents, the Terps turned aside the second-ranked Illini's challenge, thanks to a superb defensive effort and strong performances from their backcourt. Dixon had 25 points and Blake had 10 points and nine assists, easily out-dueling Illinois' heralded backcourt of Frank Williams and Cory Bradford.
Record: 4-1
