Blackhawks' McDonough: 'Honor' to play in Winter Classic

The NHL released the 2014-15 regular-season schedule Sunday afternoon and made it official that the Chicago Blackhawks will face the Washington Capitals in the 2015 Winter Classic in Washington, D.C.

The matchup was reported last week but not formally announced until Sunday. The location has not yet been revealed but it's likely the game will be played at Nationals Park.

“It’s an honor to be selected by the NHL to participate in the 2015 Winter Classic,” Hawks President and CEO John McDonough said in a statement. “This is another marquee event for the Blackhawks and we’re looking forward to spending New Year’s Day in our nation’s capital.”

It will mark the Hawks' third outdoor apperance after facing the Detroit Red Wings in the 2009 Winter Classic at Wrigley Field and also hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins last March at Soldier Field as part of the NHL's Stadium Series.

The Hawks also announced that they will begin training camp at Notre Dame for the second consecutive season. That part of camp will run from Sept. 19-21.

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to return to Notre Dame and their world-class facility,” Hawks general manager Stan Bowman said in a statement. “We received an overwhelming positive response from our players and staff on their experience at Notre Dame last September and are looking forward to another great weekend to kick off training camp next season.”
