The Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ana Ivanovic Chicago Sports Venue Tour made its stop at Wrigley Field on Tuesday night.
Schweinsteiger, the former Manchester United and German soccer legend who joined the Fire this season, threw out the first pitch prior to the Cubs game against the Phillies while his wife, former No. 1 tennis player Ana Ivanovic, and some teammates looked on.
Schweinsteiger and Ivanovic had previously attended Blackhawks and Bulls games since he signed with the Fire two months ago.
On Tuesday night, it was Wrigley’s turn and Schweinsteiger had the honors of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. After making his way to the mound while wearing a Cubs jersey with No. 31 on the back, the right-hander checked an imaginary runner at first and lofted a pitch over the plate — but high — as the crowd cheered. Later, Schweinsteiger sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” with two Fire teammates.
On Wednesday, Schweinsteiger, who has more than four million Twitter followers, tweeted, “Congrats on yesterday’s win, @Cubs! And thanks for the stunning possibility of throwing the first pitch last night.”
A short time later he followed that tweet with another one with photos from the evening that read, “Had an impressive evening with @Analvanovic and some of my teammates at Wrigley Field – the historic home of @Cubs.
Next stop, Guaranteed Rate Field?
