"Fitz" and "Basketball Fitz" will remain in Evanston, with Northwestern set to announce that football coach Pat Fitzgerald and basketball coach Chris Collins have signed contract extensions.
The announcement will be made at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Under Armour store on Michigan Avenue, a nod to Northwestern's official outfitter and its self-proclaimed designation as "Chicago's Big Ten team."
The Collins component is more significant because some believed he was a threat to leave after taking Northwestern to the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history. The Tribune reported last month that Collins has been telling recruits: This is where I will be.
A source told the Tribune that Collins' extension runs through 2024-25 and that he got a huge raise. His new salary will be in excess of $3 million, more than Illinois is paying new coach Brad Underwood.
Collins is 73-60 in four seasons.
A different source confirmed an ESPN report that Fitzgerald's extension is for 10 years, tying him to his alma mater through 2026, and added that the sides had been discussing terms since January.
Fitzgerald is 77-62 with seven bowl appearances in 11 seasons at Northwestern. A salary in the $3.5 million-to-$4 million range would draw him even with his Power Five conference peers.
