Police: Man wanted, accused of stabbing, seriously wounding another man in Newport News

Newport News police are asking for help finding a man wanted in connection with a stabbing that seriously wounded another man last month.

The incident happened shortly after 7 a.m. Sept. 15 in the 700 block of Waterfront Circle, according to spokesman Master Police Officer Brandon Maynard.

A 33-year-old Newport News man told police he was approached by another man who asked him for a cigarette. The victim said he did not give the man a cigarette, and he turned away from him. The other man then took out a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times, according to Maynard.

The victim was taken to the hospital with injuries to several vital organs, Maynard said.

Meanwhile, Ashford Carter, 33, of the 600 block of 35th Street in Newport News, was arrested on warrants unrelated to the incident, according to Maynard. Carter was taken into custody on the unrelated charges and later released.

Several days later, the victim’s condition stabilized and he identified Carter in a photo spread as the person who stabbed him, Maynard said.

Carter is charged with malicious wounding in connection with the incident. Anyone who has information about his whereabouts is asked to call the anonymous Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
