The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the region from noon until 8 p.m. Monday, warning of heat indices that could reach as high as 104 to 108 degrees.
In Newport News, the forecast calls for sunny skies with a high of 95 with calm winds that pick up slightly in the afternoon. However, high humidity will temperatures feel in excess of 100 degrees.
The high heat index puts people at a higher risk of heat-related illness, according to the agency. It recommends those who work or spend time outside on Monday take extra precautions, including wearing light and loose-fitting clothing and drinking plenty of water.
Tuesday is expected to be slightly cooler, with a high around 90.
