Things to do and places to go for St. Patrick's Day in Hampton Roads

Here is a look at some of the events around the Peninsula and Hampton celebrating St. Patrick's Day, which falls on Thursday.

St. Patrick's Day Weekend at Alewerks. The festivities at Alewerks in Williamsburg start noon Thursday with green Shorty Time on tap and Poisoned Dwarf Dry Irish Stout on nitro. Catch live music throughout the weekend with Dave McKenney and Friends 5-8 p.m. Saturday and 2-4 p.m. Sunday with Poisoned Dwarf. Don't forget to wear green for pint specials. City Center Shamrock. Festivities at Fountain Plaza in Newport News include food trucks, a cornhole tournament, children's activities and adult beverages, as well as performances by Newport News Pipes and Drums, The Fighting Jamesons and Tuatha Dea. 6-9 p.m. Thursday. St. Patrick's Day Celebration at Smoke BBQ Restaurant & Bar. Hampton band Blue Ribbon will perform on the patio, and the Newport News restaurant is offering food and drink specials from 6-10 p.m. Thursday. Info: 757-595-4320 or smokenn.com.

Shamrocks and Shenanigans in Hampton at PBR Hampton Roads and Tapps at Power Plant Parkway. Event is 6 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $10. Green beer, scavenger hunts and more.

St. Patrick's Day festivities at Rick & Libby's. The Newport News restaurant turns St. Patrick's Day into a weeklong celebration with green beer, special menus and Libby's homemade desserts, along with a performance by The Glasgow Boys from 2-4 p.m. Sunday. Info: 757-599-5500 or rickandlibbys.com.

St. Patrick's Day at Bar Louie. Specials from Thursday through Saturday, including $4 green beer and $5 Irish whiskey until 9 p.m. each night. Shamrock Marathon at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The marathon starts at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, but there will be events and shorter races throughout the weekend. Go to shamrockmarathon.com for more info.

Norfolk's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Northside Middle School (Westmont Avenue and Granby Street) and proceeds toward Ocean View. The parade ends at First View and Government Avenue, with a party scheduled for noon at 211 W. Government Ave.

Annual St. Patrick's Day Landlubbers Boat Parade at 6 p.m. Saturday in downtown Hampton.

St Patrick's Day Adventure at Waller Mill Park in Williamsburg. Scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday. Free event. Come to the Boathouse to begin a series of activities around the park.

Safe rides

The law firm of Kalfus and Nachman is partnering with local cab companies to provide free rides home for bar patrons Thursday night.

The promotion covers Hampton and Newport News on the Peninsula, and Norfolk, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach in South Hampton Roads. The "Safe Ride Home" program offers trips from a bar to a place of residence in that city, or to an adjoining city.

Patrons can call 757-855-4444 before midnight for a ride home and must mention either Kalfus and Nachman or the Hurt Line Safe Ride Home.

Participating cab companies are Yellow Cab on the Peninsula and in Norfolk, as well as Norfolk Checker Taxi, and Black and White Cabs.
