Police: Woman forced into Newport News apartment, raped, robbed Friday morning

A woman was forced into a Newport News apartment and raped and robbed Friday morning, police said.

Newport News officers responded a report of a sexual assault and robbery in the Oyster Point area of the city shortly before 5:30 a.m., according to spokesman Master Police Officer Brandon Maynard.

There, the woman said she was outside when she was approached by a male suspect she did not know. He pulled out a gun and ordered her into the apartment. He then raped her and took items from the apartment before fleeing the area, Maynard said.

The suspect was described as a black male, approximately 6’1, heavy set, with a short haircut, and a short goatee, according to a police news release. He was last seen wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, a multi-colored shirt underneath, black shorts, and black and white high top Nike shoes, the release said.

The release stated that the police department is “deeply concerned for the community’s safety regarding this incident.” Police urge anyone with information that can assist in the investigation should call the anonymous Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
