Daily Press All-Stars: Football, Defense

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN

Armonii Burden | Lafayette | senior. The VHSL Class 4 first-team all-state selection finished the season with 107 tackles and 11 sacks. The defensive end also scored three touchdowns on fumble returns.

Kameron Wilson | Phoebus | senior. The 5-foot-11, 270-pound nose guard set the tone for the Phantoms’ bruising defensive line. He was named to the Class 3 all-state second team.

Cameron Walker | Gloucester | senior. The defensive end recorded 116 tackles, including 26 for loss, 11 sacks and three forced fumbles as the leader of the Dukes’ defense.

LINEBACKERS

Jack Erwin | Lafayette | senior. The Daily Press Player of the Year earned Class 4 first-team all-state honors as an all-purpose defender for the Rams. He also was named the Region 4A Defensive Player of the Year for his senior season, which featured 146 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, 11 sacks and three blocked kicks.

Robert Henesey | Poquoson | senior. A Class 2 first-team all-state pick and the Region 2A Defensive Player of the Year, Henesey finished the season with more than 100 tackles for the Islanders on their run to the state semifinals.

Max Barrett | Poquoson | junior. Henesey and Barrett provided a powerful one-two punch for the Islanders’ defense. Barrett led Poquoson in tackles with more than 120, including more than 20 for loss.

Juanya Majette | Hampton | senior. A stalwart member of the Crabbers’ defense, Majette was named to the 5A all-region first team.

Trey Canady | Lafayette | junior. Among a stacked corps of linebackers, Lafayette coach Andy Linn singled out Canady as the top Ram at the position. Canady contributed 118 tackles, including 89 solo and 20 for loss, as well as six forced fumbles.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Darrell Bryant | Phoebus | senior. Equally comfortable at safety, linebacker and wide receiver, Bryant proved a versatile threat for the Phantoms. He was named a Class 3 second-team all-state selection and the Peninsula District Defensive Player of the Year.

Javon Rodriquez | Hampton | senior. The senior came into his own this season for the Crabbers. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound cornerback blanketed the backfield with fellow senior cornerback Cam Stevenson and earned a 5A first-team all-region nod.

Scott Duncan | Poquoson | senior. Duncan led the Bay Rivers District with eight interceptions. He also recorded 47.5 tackles for the Islanders.

Rodney Hudson | Warhill | senior. Hudson used his speed and dexterity to nab five interceptions and record seven pass breakups as a cornerback for the Lions. He used those same skills as a running back; he finished the season with 560 rushing yards, 177 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.

PUNTER

Hayden Pittman | Windsor | sophomore. His team’s 0-10 record gave Pittman ample opportunity to perfect his skill, and at season’s end, he was named the Class 1 first-team all-state punter. The jack of all trades also played at quarterback, wide receiver, fullback, defensive end, linebacker and kicker for the Dukes.

RETURN SPECIALIST

Jie Cleveland | Woodside | senior. Cleveland took two kickoff returns for touchdowns this season and broke plenty more returns for big yardage. As a utility player on offense, he also contributed 694 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 98 carries and 270 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 15 catches.

ALL-PURPOSE

Colten Hicks | Poquoson | junior. Hicks garnered Class 2 first-team all-state honors as an all-purpose defender. He played everywhere from safety to linebacker to defensive end for the Islanders. He added 800 rushing yards and 270 receiving yards on offense.

Cole Edwards | York | senior. The Class 3 second-team all-state pick as an all-purpose defender, Edwards came on strong during York’s run to the Class 3 state quarterfinal round.
