"Roots" is getting a reboot.
Variety has confirmed that History Channel will be remaking the 1977 miniseries after nabbing the rights to the original from Mark Wolper, son of late "Roots" exec producer David L. Wolper, along with the rights to the 1976 novel "Roots: The Saga of an American Family." Deadline was first to break the news.
"Roots" debuted on ABC in January 1977, and earned dozens of Emmy noms, along with nine wins. The finale of the original "Roots" mini still ranks as the third highest-rated TV broadcast, per Nielsen ratings, with 100 million viewers.
