'Duncan Phyfe: Master Cabinetmaker' at The Met
Duncan Phyfe remains America's best-known cabinetmaker, revered for his distringuished designs and excellent craftsmanship. The Metropolitan Museum of Art celebrates his work with a retrospective exhibit showcasing furniture produced in his Fulton Street workshops. The exhibit will highlight furniture made from 1805 to 1820, his "archaeological" antique style of the 1820s and the plain Grecian style from the late 1830s and 1840s. The exhibit will also feature Phyfe's personal possessions, documents and drawings.
The exhibit is on display through May 6 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Ave., New York. Admission is $25 for adults, $17 for seniors and $12 for students. Children under age 12 are free. Go to metmuseum.org.
Washington Winter Show
Beginning Jan. 6, the 2012 Washington Winter Show highlights fine arts and timeless antiques from more than 40 exhibitors in a three-day event. The theme for this year's show is the White House, with an exhibit featuring "treasures of the first families," including objects that are not normally shown outside the executive mansion. Items featured are from the administrations of James Madison, James Monroe, Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson and others. A lecture Friday will feature Nancy Clarke, the former chief florist for the White House.
The show takes place Jan. 6-8 at the Katzen Arts Center at American University. Admission is $20 and includes all three days. Lectures and other events are at additional cost. Go to washingtonwintershow.com for more information and ticket prices.
National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink
Take a spin at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink, open mid-November through mid-March, weather permitting. Visitors can see magnificent works of sculpture while skating in the open air and enjoying music from the state-of-the-art sound system.
The ice rink is on the National Mall at 7th Street and Constitution Avenue NW. The rink is open daily. Admission is $8 for adults and $7 for children age 12 and under for a two-hour session. Go to nga.gov and click on programs and events.
Mid-Atlantic Rockfish Shootout
Seafood lovers can enjoy a day on the water casting and reeling as part of one of the largest rockfish tournaments in the country. Bring your fresh catch to the Waterman's Surfside Grille to have it prepared to order by the chef. Weigh-ins of eligible fish are at the Virginia Beach Fishing Center at Rudee Inlet between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
