Check out the sculptures at the monthlong Art of Sand Festival in Cape Canaveral
The beach will become a source of inspiration at the monthlong Art of Sand Festival in Cape Canaveral. (ORLANDO SENTINEL FILE / January 28, 2006)
With apologies to Jimi Hendrix, I don't think he was talking about the kind of seashore architecture at the heart of the monthlong Art of Sand Festival, which runs April 2-May 1 on the beach next to the Radisson Resort at the Port in Cape Canaveral.
So perhaps that kind of craftsmanship is worth celebrating with activities that include an opening weekend (April 2-4) featuring the sand-based art works as well as food, entertainment and diversions from other vendors. Admission: $8 adults, $4 seniors, military personnel and kids under age 12.
(General hours for the month: 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays; 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Fridays; 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturdays; 9 a.m.-7 p.m.)
That seems like a lot to look at sand, but proceeds benefit the arts in Brevard County. So it's a good cause.
The kickoff weekend will be followed by 30 days of sand sculpting competitions, tours of the sculptures and additional events tied to the Brevard arts and cultural organizations.
Throughout the event, there also will be a youth pavilion where kids can create their own sculptures, learn fun facts about sand and the environment and enjoy other hands-on activities.
Some key dates: There's a corporate challenge competition (April 10); the Space Coast Open (April 16-18); a student sand-sculpting competition (April 24); Family Fun Days & Nights (April 30-May 1); and a Festival Finale on May 1.
At the finale, of course, bullies will be unleashed to take down all the sculptures.
