Postcards from Florida

Of all the excuses for a getaway, Valentine's Day is perhaps the easiest to justify.
A couples weekend can work for both parties in the relationship: Together time, solitary time, romantic time. If you play your cards right, guys, it could even be possible to carve out a little time for golf — at least I've heard that it can be done.
And resorts in Florida are more than eager to help make the romance happen.
Here's a short list of Valentine's Day promotions (and you can find more of them on my travel blog at OrlandoSentinel.com/postcards):
Close to home (for Orlando readers, at least), there's the "Harbor Nights" event on Feb. 18 at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando. It features a tasting of wines and sparkling wines, gourmet food samples, chocolate fountain, free hand-rolled cigars, live jazz as well as arias by Portofino's opera singers. Call 407-503-1200 or visit LoewsHotels.tix.com for hotel information and to buy tickets.
In St. Petersburg, the historic Renaissance Vinoy Resort & Golf Club is offering a limited-time Valentine's Day special for those who live within 100 miles of the resort. The deal features a reduced rate of $169 per night (a savings of almost 40 percent) including breakfast for two on Feb. 13 and 14 only. Visit vinoyrenaissanceresort.com for more information on the hotel and the deal.
On the northwest Gulf Coast, the Beaches of South Walton yields no shortage of ideas to spark romance at one of the area's 15 beach communities. The options include a "Valentine's Interlude" at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, with music, dancing, dining, four-course meal, a beach-view suite, free champagne and breakfast. Visit sandestin.com for details.
Of course, romance needn't be confined to an annual holiday. In that spirit, the Gaylord Palms Resort in Kissimmee has introduced "Remember Romance," a vacation package that is valid through July 31.
Rates start at $285 per night and include champagne, welcome mousse-filled chocolates, a $40 daily credit for any hotel restaurant and 20 percent off spa treatments. Visit gaylordpalms.com for information.
