The Bard's Market at the Virginia Shakespeare Festival will offer a variety of entertainment prior to each performance. The season opens with “Illyria,” opening at 8 p.m. June 25 and running Wednesdays-Sundays through July 6. Julius Caesar runs July 10-20.
There is great excitement about this season’s offerings, with “Illyria,” the musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, “Twelfth Night,” directed by festival veteran John Ammerman. When it last played here in 2006, it was popular with audiences of all ages.
“Julius Caesar,” the sprawling tragedy that contains some of the Bard’s most famous speeches will be presented for the first time since 1983. The show features a corps of veteran and newcomers and festival artistic director Christopher Owens at the helm.
Complementing what’s happening onstage is a full line of entertainment in the annual Bard’s Market, located in the Dodge Room of Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall. The room is transformed into a full-fledged shop of unique items with a definite Shakespearean twist. Patrons can peruse and purchase a variety of gift items, and previous festival posters and T-shirts all while listening to a variety of musical diversions.
The Bard’s Market opens one hour before the evening and matinee performances and is open during the show’s 15-minute intermissions. It open this week with famed local musician Timothy Seaman on hammered dulcimer at 7:15 p.m. opening night, June 25
