Escape from the heat this weekend with a special Spring Arts event – Art Escape offers a laid-back gallery and restaurant crawl over Memorial Day weekend.

There’s no all-encompassing schedule or ticket. “From the galleries’ perspective, they’re just encouraged to do something Art Escape weekend that would be different or not the usual thing going on in their gallery,” said Terry Buntrock, Arts Coordinator for Greater Williamsburg.

“If they’re all doing something on Friday, Saturday, Sunday,” Buntrock continued, “it’s just a great time to get out and visit them all and have a good time.”

And, this year, Buntrock said restaurants are an added component.

Colonial Folk Art

The gallery will present “The Mind of Aggie Robertson: A Retrospective,” showcasing the imaginative world brought to life in Agnes Robertson’s paintings. Robertson’s collection is available only to Meibohm Fine Art Gallery and Colonial Folk Art. The free showing will occur 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday and 1-4 p.m., Sunday at 110 Bacon Ave. For more information, call 941-8926.

Quirks of Art

Art Escape weekend at Quirks includes two jewelry trunk shows. One features Elaine B. Jewelry’s dainty, geometrical designs. The other features the return of an old Quirks’ favorite, said gallery manager Kendra Law: Joyce Fritz and her “Yipes!” jewelry line of polymer clay insect broaches, pins and more. Visit Quirks from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Friday and Saturday and 12-6 p.m., Sunday at 1430 High St. #709. For more information, call 645-4366.

A Touch of Earth

On Saturday afternoon, gallery owner Lianne Lurie and Paul Pittman will work in clay, while Michele Leblanc-Piche demonstrates cabochon jewelry-wrapping techniques. Sunday afternoon features Timothy Seaman in a performance on hammered dulcimer, as well as a visit from artist Bob Oller. Stop by the gallery at 6580 Richmond Road. For more information, call 565-0425.

Linda Matney Fine Art Gallery

Owner John Lee Matney said the gallery will take private appointments from those interested in a personal, in-depth look at the current exhibits and artists on display, including “Kent Knowles: Passage,” a collection of paintings from the Savannah College of Art and Design faculty member. Call 675-6627 to make an appointment for either Saturday or Sunday.

Auntie M’s American Cottage

The handcrafts gallery in Yorktown will host two workshops with artist Barb Risucci. During the workshop, Risucci will explain the process of creating wet felted beads, and guests can try their hand at crafting the wool beads. The one-hour sessions occur at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., Sunday at 330 Water St. For more information, call 369-8150.

Participating restaurants

A handful of local restaurants will each host an artist during Art Escape weekend. Even more, the artists’ works will remain in the restaurants through the end of Spring Arts in June. Artist Bob Oller will paint on the MAD about Chocolate patio from 1-4 p.m., Saturday. Aberdeen Barn will host local painter Kay Krapfl, while Second Street bistro hosts abstract artist Dorothy Grebos, Buntrock said. Other restaurant participants include Prime46forty and Waypoint Seafood and Grill.
