Rockahock Campground is firing up another day filled with family fun as its Pickin’ and Pullin’ BBQ Competition returns for a fourth year.

Festivities include live entertainment and a silent auction. Kids can enjoy an inflatable bounce park, an obstacle course and a 30-foot slide. Guests will be able to taste test competitors’ concoctions and vote for their favorites; the winner will receive the People’s Choice Award.

The first competition in 2014 hosted 41 teams; this year features more than 70.

“The Pickin’ N Pullin’ BBQ Competition is becoming one of Rockahock Campground’s biggest events of the year,” Rockahock Vice Presdient Jon Caldwell said in a news release. “BBQ has become very popular in America in recent years and campgrounds make one of the best locations to host the competitions.”

Proceeds will benefit Proclaiming Grace Outreach, a non-profit group offering food, clothing and home repairs to those in need across New Kent and James City counties. The organization is raising money in an effort to open the Jenna Grace King Outreach Center that will serve as their base of operations, housing a thrift store and classroom space as well.

“Rockahock Campground has been extremely fortunate to partner with Proclaiming Grace Outreach in this event,” Caldwell said.

For participants, the event serves as a qualifier for two broader competitions: the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitationals and the American Royal World Series of Barbeque.

Caldwell said people can expect “a day full of family friendly activities.”
