Each year, Child Development Resources’ Bid ‘n Buy Auction seems to epitomize unity, as community members come together to make the fundraiser happen, and to make it a success.

But that doesn’t mean lively bidding wars don’t ensue.

Development associate Jenny O’Donnell said auction organizers always develop theories about which items will be the most popular. “Usually there are a couple items that take you by surprise,” she said.

With more than 500 items up for sale, there’s no telling what could happen at the 38th annual Bid ‘n Buy Auction on Sunday, March 20. Regardless, it’s sure to entertain.

“It’s such a family-friendly event,” said Betsy Edwards, special events coordinator. “Whether you bid on anything or not, it’s a fun time.”

As Child Development Resources’ biggest annual fundraiser, the Bid ‘n Buy auction raised $198,000 last year. This year holds special significance to the organization, as it celebrates 50 years serving children with disabilities or development delays and their families.

Though organized by Child Development Resources, the auction is made possible by the community, with items donated by individuals, local businesses and organizations. O’Donnell said some donors even hand-craft items for the auction every year.

“The local community really steps up,” O’Donnell said. “They’re just huge supporters of the auction…. They always have been.”

“We have people cleaning out their homes and giving us priceless, beautiful things,” Edwards said.

Often, this translates to diversity among items up for sale. With 11 categories, from home improvement to entertainment to children’s items, there’s an auction item and price range for everyone.

Here’s just a taste from the silent auction: an Alewerks gift basket, New York Giants tickets, European tapestries, a WISC birthday party or M18 cordless tool combo kit. Interested guests can browse items and start placing bids online at cdr.org.

On auction day, guests bid electronically through BidPal, using either a smart phone or a BidPal bidding device, available upon registration. A live auction later in the day, with auctioneer Gary Massie, features larger packages – including a luxury cruise on the York River and a beach getaway to Corolla, N.C. Winners of the raffle for a Disney Cruise will also be announced at the live auction – raffle tickets are available at cdr.org.

“Our goal is to give every child the best possible start in life,” said Marsha Hargette, director of development. It’s something everyone can rally around, she said.

Each year, they do. Fueled by dedicated volunteers, the auction draws several hundred people. The day includes a petting zoo, bounce houses, face painting, live music from Take 757 and a food court with selections from ‘Croney Island’ Hot Dogs, Pita Pit and Jimmy’s.

“Once you come one time,” Hargette said, “you’re hooked.”
