As former members of a punk rock band, brothers Brett and Jeff Cahoon likely never anticipated they’d one day start a jazz band.

And not just a band that plays jazz, but one that captures the spirit of the music.

“I really wanted it to be an experience,” said Brett Cahoon, vocalist of Good Shot Judy. “I just wanted to pull out all the stops all the time.”

That’s what the Virginia-based band has done since forming a few years ago, and that’s what Good Shot Judy has planned for two “A Crooner’s Christmas” concerts, returning for a second year to Kimball Theatre Dec. 6 and 14.

“It’s truly just designed to be very entertaining, and breathe some life back into this music,” Cahoon said.

Last year’s Christmas concerts, featuring two singers and a 10-piece band, sold out. The band decided to create this year an even bigger experience, Cahoon said.

A 12-foot Christmas tree, fireplace, plenty of lights, and even some choreography, set the stage for the music — classics from Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Louis Armstrong and The Andrews Sisters to Christmas hits from Michael Buble and Mariah Carey.

With six horns, drums, bass, piano, guitar, a lead vocalist in Cahoon and three female vocalists, the hope is to capture that big-band feel from the 1940s and ’50s, Cahoon said.

That feel is what Cahoon loves about jazz.

“It’s about the swagger,” he said. “And the fact that the music is so enduring and was once performed in a way that those guys were the rock stars of their day.”

Jocelyn Oldham, a vocalist in the show, performs around the region as a solo acoustic act, but collaborating with Good Shot Judy has allowed an aspect of music she’s missed.

“The opportunity to sing with a big band, that doesn’t just come together,” said Oldham, who performed in last year’s Christmas concerts, as well.

“There’s nothing quite like making beautiful music with so many people,” Cahoon said.
