A new golf league is teeing off Thursday at Revolution Golf and Grille with the goal of supporting local charities. Organizer Bob Tubbs said the endeavor puts a new spin on the kind of charitable work he supports.

“I thought it might be fun to see if we might be able to organize something, being that they’re a new entity in town and they’re great people to work with,” he said.

The five-week league kicks off Thursday. Teams of two, three or four will compete virtually across famous courses like Pebble Beach and Pinehurst using Revolution’s golf simulations. Teams can be mixed gender. Those who cannot make either of two Thursday sessions can reserve a bay at Revolution throughout the week and continue to participate.

Each week will see proceeds supporting a different organization: FISH, Heritage Humane Society, the Lackey Clinic, the Avalon Center and Child Development Resources.

“I wanted a little bit of diversity,” Tubbs said. “It’s all about helping people who are in need of help right now.”

Tubbs also set up GoFundMe pages for each organization, so non-golfers can still contribute to their causes.

“You can’t help but be drawn in,” he said. “Instead of the abstract, think about how individually their donations impact the lives of these people, these families, these pets.”

For league meetings, Revolution is offering happy hour drink prices and a 10 percent discount on meals. Tubbs is encouraging people to bring canned goods for FISH during Thursday’s inaugural event, and he hopes it’s simply the start of something bigger.

“If we’re successful, this will just be the beginning,” he said.
