Those of us who might be guilty of neglecting our bikes will soon have a chance at redemption.

Williamsburg Area Bicyclists and James City County Parks and Recreation are uniting for Bikes out of Hibernation, which promises the opportunity to dust off the chains after a long winter for riders of all experience levels.

Free bike checks and assistance will be provided by four local bike shops: BikeBeat, Bikes Unlimited, Conte’s Bike Shop and Red Barn Bicycles.

“We’ve got people with so many different abilities,” WAB Publicity Chair M. Allison Jarvis said.

The group’s experienced riders will be leading rides along Chickahominy Riverfront Park’s Virginia Capital Trail, with lengths varying from two miles to 15 miles.

“It’s about getting people to rid themselves of any fears they might have about getting on a bike,” Jarvis said. “We might give them the confidences they have been lacking.”

Birkenmeyer can be reached by phone at 757-390-3029.
