“The Innocents,” a post-World War II drama with a stunning story, premiered in the U.S. at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and the film’s limited release continues at Kimball Theatre in September.

Directed by Anne Fontaine, whose work includes “Coco Before Chanel,” the two-hour film opens in Warsaw, Poland, following the end of World War II.

A Benedictine nun seeks help from French Red Cross doctor Mathilde. Upon arriving at the convent, Mathilde encounters the unexpected.

One of the sisters is about to give birth, and several more are pregnant, raped by Soviet soldiers.

As Mathilde continues to help the sisters, the film explores the situation’s complexities – fear of exposure, the limits of faith, the struggle between long-held traditions and present reality, to name a few.

Since its premiere, the film has been well received. “The Innocents” will run at Kimball Theatre from Sept. 4-17.
