Nearly 110 years after it was built, Norge Depot in James City County will receive a state historical marker from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

The marker, honoring the railroad depot built between 1907 and 1908, will join more than 2,500 official markers around the state.

“It is the only surviving example in James City County of the standardized, mass produced railroad architecture that became popular in the 19th century,” reads a section of the marker’s text, according to a release from the Department of Historic Resources.

Constructed by The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company, the depot served the Norge farm community, composed originally of Scandinavian immigrants who relocated to James City County from the Midwest.

Though it once faced demolition, the depot relocated half a mile north to its current location by the James City County Library in 2006. With restorations completed in 2012, the depot even acquired a Georgia Railroad caboose in 2015.

A marker dedication ceremony, open to the public, is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Sept. 10 at Norge Hall, 7402 Richmond Road.

Speakers include Lena McDonald from the Department of Historic Resources and Frank Abbott, chair of the James City County Historical Commission.
