Literacy for Life’s annual “Reading Between the Wines” fundraiser seems an unusual combination, at first: an auction, a best-selling author and plenty of wine.
But as a fundraiser and awareness-raiser for a local organization that promotes adult literacy, the event proves a winning combination.
In its sixth year, “Reading Between the Wines” welcomes New York Times best-selling author Dorothea Benton Frank, also a public speaker and nonprofit fundraiser. Frank’s first novel “Sullivan’s Island” (2000) now has more than one million copies in print.
Frank’s other bestsellers include “Plantation,” “Isle of Palms,” “Full of Grace,” “Land of Mango Sunsets,” “Folly Beach” and “The Last Original Wife.” The author will host a book-signing at the event.
Last year, “Reading Between the Wines” raised just under $74,000 in total funds, according to Deb Beach, Literacy for Life’s development coordinator.
Funds benefit the organization in serving more than 750 adults each year, through tutoring and training in adult basic education, English as a second language, Health Education and Literacy (HEAL) and more.
In addition to the wine, hors d’oeuvres, silent and live auctions, “Reading Between the Wines” allows guests to meet some of Literacy for Life’s adult learners, as they share their stories and experiences.
The event is scheduled for 6 p.m., Nov. 7 at Williamsburg Winery. Tickets, $75, are available at literacyforlife.org/events.
