Visitors to Sentara Williamsburg may notice a new addition to the hospital’s flagpole.
The white flag, reading “100 Top Hospitals” in bold, commemorates Sentara’s recent award from Truven Health Analytics’ 100 Top Hospitals study. Out of nearly 2,800 U.S. hospitals included in the annual study, Sentara Williamsburg was named to the top 100 – the only hospital in Virginia selected.
Sentara staff gathered Friday at a luncheon to watch the flag hoisted into a clear blue sky.
“This seemed like the appropriate thing to do” said Sentara Williamsburg president Dave Masterson, hoping to recognize and celebrate the dedication of Sentara’s employees.
Masterson said he’s often asked when Sentara Williamsburg applied for the award. His answer? There was no application process. Truven Health Analytics conducts an involuntary review. The study has become the standard for measuring quality of hospital care in the U.S., according to the 100 Top Hospitals website.
“We’re very proud of it,” Masterson said. “It was unexpected, but we’re not surprised.”
“It’s the commitment of the people here,” he said.
