The Triangle Arts and Culture League used the creative talents of Williamsburg-area designers to help raise funds for the non-profit group.

The league held its art&garden fundraiser on Saturday, May 4, which included a Tablescape Design Contest where participants used selections from Colonial Williamsburg’s “Trend Meets Tradition” line of wallpapers in a myriad of creative ways.

“We tried really hard to be diverse and attract a wide audience,” TACL Founder and CEO Terry Buntrock said.

More than 25 designs were created. The contest spanned five categories, each emphasizing different design parameters such as color or place.

“They use that element as part of the design and make it more modern,” Buntrock said. “That was really the fun of it.”

One team used the wallpaper to make a canoe. Another wrapped books and created flowers with it. The grand prize winner, Annette Lindsey of the local floral shop I Do Weddings with Love, cut the wallpaper into letters and also covered the inside of an antique trunk with it.

“It looked amazing,” Buntrock said. She applauded the imagination and unique perspectives on display.

Kris Fisher, of the Colonial Williamsburg Products Division, headed a team of judges, who selected five winners to receive a total of $1,500 in prizes. Some of the winners contributed their prize money to charitable causes, like Barbara Adcox, who donated in support of Alzheimer’s research.

For local fans of art and culture, there’s also plenty in store for the future.

“We got a really great reception,” Buntrock said. “TACL will definitely do this again.”
