The Virginia Symphony Orchestra announced its 98th season Thursday, planning a series of concerts beginning in September and running through April 2019. Music director JoAnn Falletta will also return for her 28th season with the organization.

In a news release, Falletta said the season “presents a palette of extraordinary depth and color, featuring favorites and exciting discoveries that will delight every music lover.”

The 2018-19 season spans nine concerts. The first in the series runs Sept. 21-23 and features Modest Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” alongside a contemporary violin concerto crafted by film composer Danny Elfman.

Subsequent concerts feature the likes of Maurice Ravel’s “Boléro” and Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony No. 2,” among others. The season’s guest artists include cellist Julian Schwarz, pianist Jeffrey Biegel and Scott Yoo, chief conductor and artistic director of the Mexico City Philharmonic.

The symphony’s “Night at the Movies” concert also returns in April 2019, this time highlighting music from Alfred Hitchcock’s “Spellbound” and John Williams’ score for Steven Spielberg’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

“The VSO has created a season to celebrate,” Falletta said.
