The College of William and Mary’s Youth Film Institute returns for its seventh year Oct. 27-28, offering middle and high school students the opportunity to learn about the art of filmmaking through hands-on experiences.

The program tasks students with collaborating in small groups to create short films. Workshops highlight aspects of cinema such as story structure, screenwriting, storyboarding and video production. New sessions explore green screen use, editing and stop-motion animation.

A William and Mary film and media studies student oversees each team through workshop activities and short film production.

The program costs $50, with needs-based scholarships available. Space is limited. For more information and to register, visit wm-yfi.com. All workshops take place in the Earl Greg Swem Library’s Reeder Media Center.

Students will screen their finished short films and field audience questions at the Kimball Theatre Nov. 5. The event is free and open to the public.
