With performances by vocalists of many ages and choruses of many sizes, the annual winter concert presented by Williamsburg Women’s Chorus certainly doesn’t lack variety.
The close to 50-member chorus, in its 52nd season, performs a holiday program Dec. 6 with appearances from the Williamsburg Youth Chorale and the Choraliers, a small ensemble within the women’s chorus.
At the heart of the program is Benjamin Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols,” an 11-movement work the British composer wrote while crossing the Atlantic in 1942. Virginia Symphony Orchestra harpist Barbara Chapman will accompany the piece.
“It’s one of the Christmas classics,” said Rebecca Davy, the chorus’ new director.
The Choraliers follow with a three-piece “Songs of Mary” segment, including Eleanor Daley’s “When Christ Was Born of Mary Free,” while the full chorus will return with a similar three-piece “Songs of Winter” section.
The Williamsburg Youth Chorale, a group sponsored by the Williamsburg Choral Guild, performs two contemporary Christmas pieces on its own, Davy said, before joining the women’s chorus for “Snow” and “Wisselton, wasselton” by Alan Bullard.
The concert includes a sing-along, inviting audience members to join in for some carols.
Davy, also the music director at Bruton Parish, said she sang in the chorus for many years before becoming director.
“It’s just an absolutely wonderful group of women,” she said.
