A good “fit” with your car can impact safety on the road.

Peninsula Seniors and Law Enforcement Together presents a free “CarFit” checkup event on Thursday, June 16.

CarFit helps senior citizens assess and improve the fit of their cars. In a 20-minute session, trained professionals run through a 12-point checkup with each participant. They’ll inspect things like foot positioning on gas and brake pedals and seat proximity to the steering wheel.

CarFit’s pilot test in 2005 assessed more than 300 participants, according to CarFit’s website. These initial sessions revealed that 37 percent of participants needed at least one vital safety issue corrected.

CarFit was developed by the American Society on Aging, in partnership with the American Automobile Association, AARP and American Occupational Therapy Association.

The event will occur from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., June 16 at Northside Christian Church, 1300 George Washington Memorial Highway.
