With the York River serving as a beautiful backdrop, the Yorktown Market Days season kicks off Saturday for the 12th year at Riverwalk Landing.

Opening day festivities include performances by the Fifes and Drums of Yorktown and Phil Poteat, a culinary demonstration courtesy of Chef K Cooking and an array of food trucks, vendors and artists serving as a taste of the weekly offerings to come.

Each Saturday throughout the season, the market features goods for sale such as fresh produce, seafood, meat, soaps and dog treats in addition to local artists’ creations and live entertainment. Several events, such as the Fitness Market on May 12 and Paws at the River Sept. 8, mix things up with unique themes.

For the first time, the market is partnering with the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to offer fresh food options for people in need; individuals in the program will have the opportunity to use their SNAP EBT cards to purchases tokens that can be redeemed at participating vendors.

Markets run 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday through Oct. 27, excluding May 5 and Oct. 6. Some themed markets feature extended hours. Admission is free. For more information, visit bit.ly/2uXVefl or call 890-3500.
