College Mace used at Opening Convocation

The College of William and Mary used the re-fashioned College Mace for the first time Aug. 26 during Opening Convocation. In mid-August, university officials agreed to remove a Confederate flag and seal of the Confederacy from the mace, a 1923 gift to the university used in formal ceremonies. The Confederate symbols were preserved as part of the college's Special Collections  at Swem Library. They were replaced with silver plates for the annual ceremony to welcome new students.
