51 Scholarships Awarded from WJCC Scholarship Fund at Williamsburg Community Foundation

The WJCC Scholarship Fund at the Williamsburg Community Foundation awarded 51 scholarships to graduating seniors of Lafayette, Jamestown, and Warhill High Schools at a reception on June 4th at Jamestown High School. The ceremony was generously sponsored by TowneBank. The Scholarship Fund awarded a total of $61,600 with funds raised from contributions from individuals, businesses, high school parent-teacher-student associations, and civic groups. Over the past few years, many generous local donors have contributed to an endowed scholarship general fund at the Foundation, which provided its first scholarship this year.

Increasing endowment for scholarship is just one part of the Foundation's VISION 2020 initiative, which gives donors the flexibility to endow those areas that interest them the most, including Arts and Culture, Children and Young Adults, Environment and Conservation, Senior Services, Health and Community Wellness, and Scholarship.

Each scholarship, for $1,000 or more, is for students' post-high school educational pursuits. Scholarships were awarded in consideration of these factors: curriculum difficulty, class rank, extra-curricular activities, application essay, and financial need. Students received the following scholarships:

The Williamsburg Community Foundation is a collection of gifts from generous local citizens, mostly invested in long-term endowment funds, that will benefit our community forever. Each fund provides grantmaking dollars for community needs. Since 1999, the Foundation has distributed $5.6 million for grants and scholarships combined. Like all community foundations, WCF is overseen by a volunteer board of leading citizens and run by professionals with expertise in knowing our community's needs. The Foundation serves as a philanthropic center where donors may set up their professionally managed personal funds without incurring the expense involved in establishing a private Foundation.
