Members of The Rotary Club of Williamsburg were addressed by Nikki Montero, RN, who spoke on "The Role and Challenges of a School Nurse." As the nurse at D.J. Montague Elementary School, Nikki has what she calls her "dream job." It has its daily challenges, of course, which she described in vivid and often humorous detail. She is responsible for providing first aid, medication administration, and monitoring health for both students and staff. She also implements case management for students with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, seizures, severe allergies, and asthma. She made an excellent case for the vital importance of the school health program, one that should be protected in setting school budgets. She is shown with husband Eddie Montero (at left) receiving her book donation certificate from club's President Chuck Hobson.
