Bayside Youth Ballet 25th Anniversary

Ballet Youth Ballet will present their 25th Anniversary performance, "A Silver Celebration of Dance" on June 3, 2018, at the Harry M. Ward Auditorium at 2:00p in Mathews. Bayside Youth Ballet was founded in the fall of 1992 by Debbie Diggs, owner of Diggs School of Dance, to provide young dancers with enhanced instruction and performance opportunities and to bring cultural awareness to our local communities. Dancers auditioned for membership as an apprentice or senior dancer and set to work on the first performance held on May 1, 1993 at Thomas Hunter Middle School. Since then the company has been serving the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck regions of Virginia by enhancing community involvement with exceptionalism through dance and leadership. In 1996 BYB performed its first full length ballet, "The Snow Maiden." This ballet was performed annually for several years before the company began showcasing excerpts from classical ballets with original choreography. In 2011 BYB returned to a story ballet performing "Peter and the Wolf". In 2013, Bayside Youth Ballet was commissioned by Nina Eastman Buzby, a retired Gloucester County school teacher and professional musician, to bring to life "The 12 days of Christmas" for the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck area to celebrate the Christmas season while involving the abundance of talent in our communities. Most recently, the company had added "The Land of the Sweets", Act II of the Nutcracker, to their ever growing repertoire.
Community service and outreach are an integral part of the membership experience, and are reached through benefit performances and community projects. BYB has fundraised and performed for a variety of needs ranging from local families to Operation Smile to cancer drives. In 2009 BYB started its first annual "Summer Dance Experience," a summer dance camp taught and led by BYB dancers under the supervision of the faculty of Diggs School of Dance. In the past, BYB performed for convalescent centers, youth groups, public and private schools and various other organizations.
The company is governed by a Board of Directors established to assist the company in realizing its mission and positively contributing to the quality of life in local communities. Active community involvement is also critically important to the overall success of the non-profit company. As a 5Olc3 organization, the performing company continually struggles to maintain a cash flow that meets its operational expenses, i.e., costumes, stage lights, backdrops, insurance, sound equipment, travel, props, advertising, supplies, postage, education, etc. Even though the dancers receive all their rehearsal time, choreography, and directing at no cost, there is still an operational cost that must be offset. To help reduce this cost, and to afford each dancer an opportunity to share directly in accomplishing the Company's mission, community sponsors, advertisers and donors are crucial to the Company's success. By public donations and attendance at the performance events, the company can continue to develop future generations of dancers and responsible, contributing members of our communities.
25 years later, BYB looks to the future as it continues to enhance the community through dance. The mission of Bayside Youth Ballet is to provide superior instruction, exceptional curriculum, nurturing environments, and rigorous performance standards for aspiring young dancers. As a result, many of the dancers have pursued a career in the performing arts field and dance education. Currently, alumni are faculty members of Diggs School of Dance, dancing and choreographing for companies in New York and international dance companies, as well as owning and operating their own dance studios. Several alumni have or are currently pursuing a degree in dance from colleges and universities.
The 25th Anniversary Celebration begins at 2:00p at the Mathews High School Auditorium. Tickets are $5 and are available at Diggs School of Dance as well as at the door. For more information call 804-694-5900.
