Commonwealth Attorney Nate Green spoke today to the James City County Rotary Club on the subject of the impact of new technology on the prosecution of criminals in the state, and how cases are being solved today that would never have been brought to court in the past for lack of evidence. Evidence today is overwhelming. The question being debated at this time is how much of it should be allowed in court, and how much is private data that must be withheld. Body cameras on the front of each policeman's uniform are fine, but when should they be turned on or off? Similar questions affect the use of security cameras, license plate scanners, and other hi tech devices, even drones, which will rapidly change the public perception of morality that we all grew up with.
