Ferns in the Woods

On Saturday, Sept 10, Helen Hamilton led 26 participants up and down a muddy ravine in Freedom Park to see ferns, orchids and mushrooms. The walk was sponsored by the John Clayton Chapter, Virginia Native Plant Society and was attended by Master Naturalists trainees, Master Gardeners and members of native plant chapters. The group learned the differences among several species of ferns and mosses, many wetland plants, and found the VNPS 2016 Wildflower, and orchid commonly known as Downy Rattlesnake Plantain.
