Williamsburg, VA - Berret's Seafood Restaurant, Williamsburg Area Restaurant Association and
Williamsburg Farmer's Market are proud to announce the recipient of the First Annual Tom
Austin Culinary Scholarship Award. Kevin Holland, 23 years of age and a Student at the Culinary
Institute of Virginia was selected as the 2017 recipient.
Tom Austin was a partner with Berret's Seafood Restaurant when it opened in 1985 here in
Williamsburg, VA. The building was first a Ford Dealership, then a Gas Station before becoming
one of Willliamsburg's favorite destination for local menu items. Tom Austin was a strong
participant in the local community and in 2002, along with friend Tom Power of the Cheese Shop,
they started what we now know as the Williasmburg Farmer's Market.
With the mission to remember and honor Tom in our Culinary Community, Berret's, WARA
and the Williamsburg Farmer's Market, got together and started a fund to help students further
their culinary education.
Kevin Holland was selected from a group of students studing at the Culinary Institue of Virginia;
however, we were told it was a tough decision as all of the canadiates were really strong. Kevin's
smile and heart-felt dedication to the Culinary Industry helped the committee to make the
decision to select Kevin. Kim Hicks, Campus Director for The Culinary Institute of Virginia said "I
never see Kevin without a smile on his face and a positive attitude. I knew when I first met Kevin
that he was someone special." Kevin says his presentation comes from his heart and that he
was inspired by his Aunts and Grandmother, having spent so much time with them in the kitchen.
Kevin recently graduated from Culinary Institute of Virginia and is working for Warwick Forest in Newport News, VA.
The Tom Austin Culinary Scholarship Award will continue in the future with the next recipient to
be awarded in the spring of 2018.
