Hampton Roads Winery Grand Opening

PRESS RELEASE
Hampton Roads Winery Grand Opening Weekend April 14-16

A ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, April 14 at 11 am will kick off Grand Opening Weekend at Hampton Roads Winery. The ceremony is open to the press, will be attended by state and county government officials and local business men and women, and will be followed by a luncheon and wine reception. An unveiling of Virginia's first goat tower will also be on display. Standing nearly 35 feet in the air, the ninth and tallest tower of its kind in the world, is home to 5 baby Nigerian Dwarf goats.

Hampton Roads Winery at White Oak Farm is Surry County's only winery. Located on 40 acres, White Oak Farm is home to a vineyard, the wine-making facility, a cattle farm and a beautifully refurbished 1898 home, originally owned by Harry Spratley, who raised horses for the New York City carriage trade. The ribbon cutting ceremony is to dedicate the newly-constructed Tasting Center, which boasts the wine bar, gift shop and function hall. The center opened to the public in November 2015, and is modeled after a carriage house to complement the history of the farm.

Hampton Roads Winery is owned and operated by David and Diane Sheldon. The couple planted their first vines in 2008 at a second vineyard located in the Bacon's Castle district of Surry. The 2 vineyards within Surry County currently make up 10 ½ acres and over 8000 vines. The Sheldon's specialize in Bordeaux Reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petite Verdot. White varieties grown include Viognier and Seyval Blanc, to go along with new world American grapes, Norton and Scuppernong. The winery currently produces six carefully-crafted wines, and will be releasing more varieties later this year.
