On April 2nd, The Virginia Gazette published a story on the waning interest in safe, alcohol-free After Prom events sponsored by high school Parent Teacher Student Associations (PTSA). The reporter, Ryan McKinnon, obtained input from PTSA Presidents and students at each high school. The gist of the article was that with attendance steadily dropping and costs increasing in recent years, PTSAs were faced with a difficult decision.
After debate, the Jamestown PTSA Executive Board committed to holding our annual event. In spite of our late start requesting food and prize donations from community businesses and JHS families, their contributions were abundant. Surprisingly, almost 200 tickets were purchased, far exceeding the number of tickets sold each of the last five years. Additionally, 475 Prom tickets were sold, an impressive jump from the 325 sold each of the last few years.
The Jamestown PTSA wishes to thank the following businesses for their generous contributions to our event held at the AMF Williamsburg Bowling Lanes on May 21st:
AAA Insurance (Tidewater), Acclaimed Appearance, American Family Fitness, AMF Lanes, Applebee's, Aroma's Coffeehouse, Ball Metal, Barnes & Noble (New Town), BayPort Credit Union, BlueGreenAqua Boutique, Buffalo Wild Wings, Buggy Bathe Auto Wash, Carter Iron & Steel, Casey Toyota, Center Street Grille, Chick-Fil-A (Monticello & Mooretown), Colonial Sports, Comic Cubicle, Computer Concepts, Dairy Queen, Domino's Pizza (Richmond Rd.), Dermatology Center of Williamsburg, Williamsburg Orthodontics, Dunkin Donuts, Edward Jones (New Town), Farm Fresh (Rt. 5), Five Guys, Great Wolf Lodge, Handy Ice & Water, hi-ho Silver, Jimmy's Oven & Grill, Kingsmill Resort, Langley Federal Credit Union, Liberty Mutual Insurance, Martin's, Marvelous Nails, Morrison's Flowers, Muscarelle Museum, New Town Car Wash, Nails Uptown, Norge Dental Center, Old Point National Bank, Opus 9, Paint On Pottery, Papa John's Pizza (Old Towne), Pirate's Cove Adventure Golf, Richmond Flying Squirrels, Rita's Ice, Sal's By Victor, Salon 109 (Dru Williams), Silk Salon (Stephanie Gibson), SmartShot Photo Booth, SnoToGo, Sports Clips, Staples, Starbucks (Monticello), Subway (Monticello), Sweet Frog, The Cheese Shop, Trader Joe's, Two Rivers Country Club, Williamsburg National Golf Club, Williamsburg Drug Company, and Wythe Candy & Gourmet Shop.
"It takes a village" has never been truer. The generosity of local mercants and JHS families allowed the PTSA to throw a great party with fabulous door prizes. The JHS parents who helped run the late night event proved we "can still hang." Special credit must also be given to this group of well-behaved students who expressed their appreciation for the evening's activities. We wish them all success and happiness.
