Tommy and Margaret Johnson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 26. They were married at Warwick River Mennonite Church, Newport News, VA in 1965.
Their children, extended family and friends surprised them with an outdoor event that consisted of a BBQ Roast, local bluegrass band, "Solid Rock," a replica of their wedding cake and homemade ice cream. Margaret's wedding dress was on display, memorabilia, and many photos decorated the tent. Tommy's Best Man, whom he hasn't seen since the wedding day, greeted him with a strong embrace, a firm handshake and tears of joy. Margaret's Maid of Honor, as well as the rest of the wedding party were also in attendance. A "50 years later" photo was captured of the original wedding party. Tommy's mother, who recently celebrated her 99th birthday was also present.
The two "newlyweds" re-honeymooned back to Nags Head, NC-a gift from their children. They re-visited and took photos at their original hotel, still in existence and all of the places where they were 50 years ago. They re-photographed their footprints in the sand as they walked on the beach.
Margaret says her secret to being married 50 years is to, "Stay in the kitchen-the way to a man's heart is through his stomach." Tommy's secret is, "To learn to say Yes-Ma'am." The couple reside locally near their family.
