"Let Freedom Ring" story presented to Williamsburg Rotary

Sue Wilson from the "Let Freedom Ring" project of the First Baptist Church here in Williamsburg was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Williamsburg's recent meeting. Wilson described the historic founding of the church back to 1776 and of its significant ties to their historic bell dated 1886 that has not rung throughout the 20th century, and now at least 52 years from the end of segregation (1964 Civil Rights Act), the bell was decided by the church's congregation to allow the public to ring the Freedom Bell in celebration of the 240th anniversary of the church. The bell is now on its way to Washington, D.C., where it will ring at the dedication of the National Museum of African American History and Culture on September 24. Pictured are (l-r) Tom Morris (club sponsor), Wilson, Carol Beers (club president), and Bobby Braxton (the club member who rang this bell as a young man).
